SOME HISTORY
Altar servers were better known as Altar Boys till 1994 because girls were not allowed to serve till then. Now, with the introduction of girls serving at the Altar at Mass, the Church has shown more inclusion and equality.
In the year 1965 Fr. Tony Saldanha was the priest in charge of the Altar Boys. A month before the final exams Fr. Saldanha would go around the classes (5th, 6th & 7th Stds) inviting boys to join the altar service. In June the number of boys would rise up to 90. Regularity of the Altar Boys at that time was up to the mark, they were even allowed to serve in the Convent. A few Altar servers even took up the vocation to the Priesthood.
COSTUMES
The Altar Servers have special vestments that they wear while on the Altar.
ACTIVITIES
The Altar Servers have a picnic/camp once a year, social gatherings and different types of tournaments, etc.
APPOINTMENTS AND TRAINING
Altar Servers are appointed to serve each mass. The appointment sheet is placed on the Altar Server’s Notice Board along with the Best Altar Server of the Month. Shields and certificates are given to the servers who are regular for the meetings and service. Training programmes are conducted for the newly joined servers. Altar Servers prepare the torches for use during High Masses.
